The London Olympic Games are over. It has shown our world at its best, and that as nations we can co-exist. It has rekindled national pride, bestowing a sense of hope as well as a new generation of sporting heroes.
Actually being at the Olympics and watching the events live in London was sensational. The atmosphere was electric and the immense pride as the winners received their medals was intense. The individual success stories were truly inspirational. As the chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee Lord Coe said, “Every one of those individual performances will create a symphony of inspiration that will create lasting change.”
The success of the Olympics has fired many young minds to be the best they can, and dream of participating in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, with high hopes of emulating the extraordinary achievements displayed in London. But, it’s not only in sports that a generation can become inspired; at Hexagon Geosystems, we work with many organisations around the world to inspire a new generation of surveyors, architects and construction engineers.
One recent example is a competition in Milton Keynes, UK, in collaboration with Class of Your Own® (COYO), where we invited local school students to take part in a competition to find out what it’s like to be a surveyor for the day. The competition was aimed at year 7 and 8 students who had to answer questions relating to sustainability and land usage in their local community and present their findings to a judging panel. The aim of the competition was to offer young people a chance to experience the excitement, buzz and pride of working in our industry.
The winning entry was from Hannah Gawkowska from Shenley Brook End School, Milton Keynes. Hannah won her school a COYO Design, Engineer, Construct! Curriculum and a Leica DISTO™ in a package worth £6900. Next year, Shenley Brook End School will be able to take part in COYO workshops, giving them the chance to research, design and virtually construct their own Eco-classroom.
Congratulations to all the Olympians, and to Hannah for inspiring a new generation!
The Class of Your Own® Design, Engineer, Construct! project based curriculum challenges young people to create a sustainable building where the whole community can learn about all things green in their very own eco-classroom.
