Though it may have been a surprise to many to see the Autodesk booth at June 2015’s HxGN LIVE, it was a natural culmination of technology innovation. We believe the collaboration between Autodesk and Leica Geosystems makes a lot of sense and represents tremendous opportunity for professionals in the construction industry.
The pairing of Leica Geosystems and Autodesk is driven by a mutual interest in improving construction industry workflows and encouraging the adoption of scanning before design, during construction and during layout for construction.
The collaboration primarily focuses on two common bottlenecks in AEC design‑construction workflows: field‑to‑model and model-to-layout.
Workflows and Education
The workflow pairing Leica Geosystems’ sensors with Autodesk’s software is ideal for many building information modeling (BIM) and construction applications. So much AEC design is done with Autodesk software that we wanted to find simple and smart ways to send the data to the modeling software. Now, scan data from the easy-to-use Leica ScanStation P16 can be imported natively into Autodesk ReCap — a suite of point cloud solutions for visualization, fast and easy editing, basic measurement and scan preparation. Customers benefit from high accuracy and reliable scanning with streamlined workflows.
Another workflow improvement offered by this collaboration addresses BIM-to-field layout. Designs and models created or edited in Autodesk AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit and Navisworks can be easily laid out in the field using the Autodesk BIM 360 Layout iPad app directly driving a Leica iCON robot 50 total station.
There is an agreement between the two companies to implement a strong educational process and focus in the construction market. To that end, the collaboration has a jointly developed website: constructrealityxyz.com.
Speed, Efficiency and Automation
There is more pressure now to streamline and automate. Processes have to be smarter and more efficient. To be successful, construction teams have to accomplish more with less.
With such demands, collaborations like Autodesk + Leica Geosystems provide customers with even more options and ensure that both companies and their customers benefit from shared ideas and creative solutions. Leica Geosystems is committed to improving the future through innovation, including strategic collaborative strategies … with the other guys. Now that’s shaping smart change.
