Striving For Real-Time Information to Feed the World

Hexagon Agriculture recently traveled to Hanover, Germany, to showcase its industry-leading solutions at AGRITECHNICA, the world’s major exhibition for innovations in agricultural technology and the latest concepts for the future of plant production.  While at the show, I sat down with Hexagon Agriculture President Bernardo de Castro and Vice President of global business development Doug Schmuland. We discussed how the company has set out to be a leading information technology player in the agroindustry with the vision to shape farming into a sustainable and intelligent ecosystem based on processes and actionable intelligence.

New concepts are needed. By the time you read this blog post, the world population will have grown by 217 people, getting closer to the 9 billion by 2040 estimation. This growth combined with increasing prosperity around the world requires doubling the world’s food production by 2050. Meeting such a huge challenge requires a several measures. Farmers strive for more with less on existing farm land, so it is important to know all attributes of the field – soil, water, nutrients and its overall potential. Based on positioning, sensors and software, decisions made by farmers will need support provided by the innovative use of actionable data. This is where Hexagon Agriculture enters the game as a major player.

The agroindustry is witnessing the trend of embedding sensors and hardware into agricultural machinery at the factory. The precision agriculture area of the market is becoming mature. As a result, Hexagon Agriculture is moving its hardware portfolio towards an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) product mix with the goal of becoming the OEM supplier. While Hexagon Agriculture products can stand alone, they are particularly well suited for the OEM space. At AGRITECHNICA, Hexagon Agriculture presented its uniquely designed and functional screens and launched a new auto-steering system. It provides a compact and robust solution for automatic-electric steering, ensuring greater accuracy for trajectories. The system’s excellent performance and small size are examples of delivering what customers in the OEM space are seeking.

Once the market reaches the stage where all manufacturers equip farming machinery with sensors and automation devices in the factories, the next big step is data – extracting, analysing and extrapolating. Farmers will need tools to extract value from the data gathered to help them make the best decisions for the most efficient production. As a consequence, the market will tend more and more to data processing and software. It will be very important to ensure that information from systems in all areas of agriculture is combined, breaking down silos of information. Hexagon Agriculture is uniquely positioned to address this challenge.

The Most Disruptive Innovation Ever

Philosophers Jean Baudrillard and Zygmunt Bauman believed that the contemporary revolution is the uncertainty revolution in a “liquid society” where everything overflows. Every day more facts arise proving the truth of this notion.

Compare current innovations to the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, for example. Today we are experiencing multiple technological revolutions within a single generation, and they are happening faster than ever before. The continuous breakdown of paradigms is causing dramatic alterations in our society.

What is most astonishing is the interconnectivity of each disruption. The cycles we experience are more linked – from technologies to business models to social movements, making it very difficult to predict what will come next and what will prevail. This is an overflow of influences without limitations on what can impact lives in a civilization where connectivity is both ubiquitous and invasive.

One of the most promising opportunities we are seeing is improved productivity across nearly every industry. These productivity improvements continue to come from new, end-to-end autonomous processes. They involve embedded intelligence, leveraged predictive and contextual analytics, real-time optimisation tools and artificial intelligence techniques.

So what is the next innovation to change the world forever, perhaps the most disruptive innovation ever?

Imagine an innovation that can:

  • Dismantle an entire global industry that directly generates more than $3 trillion USD in revenues and generates another $1 trillion USD in related sectors.
  • Completely shift the business models and value chains of dozens of segments and revenue streams including the financial services, insurance, infrastructure, public safety and transportation, oil and gas, mining, agriculture and automotive industries.
  • Directly affect government operations with significant changes to the circular flow of income, tax revenues, political policies, economic cartels, etc.
  • Drive eight million workers into unemployment while also creating an abundance of new jobs never before conceptualised.

Imagine an innovation that can do these things while also:

  • Saving hundreds of thousands of lives each year
  • Positively impacting the environment on a major scale and greatly improving the quality of life in cities across the world.
  • Redirecting billions of U.S. dollars invested in inefficient and unproductive assets to more effective investments.
  • Creating completely new industries and value chains never before imagined.

If you guessed this is a description of the autonomous car, you are right. The autonomous car is an innovation that will profoundly change the world.

How? The reasoning is simple: car utilisation is unbelievably inefficient. Our utilisation of cars is starkly different from the car manufacturing process, which represents one of the most efficient industries today. According to a study by Morgan Stanley, cars are driven only 4% of the time. That’s 8.4 trillion hours of idle time per year. If you consider the global vehicle fleet with a collective ownership value of $20 trillion USD, the amount of money wasted is staggering!

PricewaterhouseCoopers indicates that the benefits of autonomous car introduction could impact as much as 90% of the global car fleet, reducing:

  • 250 million cars to only 2.5 million in the U.S. alone through a transportation sharing model
  • 8 million traffic accidents to 1.1 million
  • 9 billion gallons of gas to 190 million gallons – road congestion leads to wasted-fuel; eliminating this would lead to a savings of $158 billion USD

If you consider the potential impact, there is a $1.3 trillion USD benefit for the U.S. economy from the introduction and implementation of autonomous vehicles (including the expansion of electrical cars).

So let’s imagine. You contact an autonomous driving car service using a mobile app. Almost immediately the car arrives at your destination. This is an effective service at an overall reduced cost.

Let’s also consider:

  • Ninety per cent of automobile accidents are caused by human error and the leading cause of death for 4-to-34-year-olds in the United States. This could mean saving millions of lives and injuries per year.
  • Average annual car ownership cost is $9,000 USD, the second most expensive asset after a house.
  • Parking comprises more than 30% of city traffic. Its elimination could add two more lanes to streets, saving time and fuel and reducing pollution. In addition, without parking lots and garages, more space would be available for city development, improving quality of life.
  • According to researchers, the impact on traffic reduction would equate to a full week of time saved per driver each year.
  • The same study has shown that 75 billion hours are spent commuting in cars, thus optimisation would create savings of around $422 billion USD per year in U.S. alone.
  • It is estimated that pollution may be reduced 15% directly and another 5% due to process optimisation and utilisation of electric cars.

Will the implementation of autonomous cars really happen? And if so, when?

Car manufacturers and consulting firms are calling for a completely autonomous car by 2030, but the driverless revolution has already started. The technological building blocks are available in the form of GPS, radar/lidar, infrared and ultrasonic sensors, cameras, inertial systems and more.

Automation software has been developed for autonomous vehicle process flows. These solutions include parking assist, intelligent cruise control, lane guidance, blind-spot sensors, emergency breaking, collision avoidance and traffic jam assist.

More self-driving features are coming soon, with General Motors, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan and Tesla saying 2017 models will have self-driving capabilities up to 90 per cent. These features, however, are mostly related to Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS) versus full autonomous driving. Hands-free driving on test courses and free roads isn’t quite the same as maneuvering through the traffic- and obstacle-filled streets typical of an urban setting.

Nonetheless, we will likely see this transition accelerated. Groupings of sensors and connectivity will enable more sets of ADAS features, providing progress in the development of a complete “all-road autonomous operation.”

So what will happen to the existing car industry and related services as a result of these non-linear changes?

Let’s briefly examine the music, movie and photography industries, how transformative these businesses are. From vinyl records to cassette tapes, from VHS to DVDs—their evolution has been constant and these are nuances of the past – digital is now our way of life. We have learned that traditional, heuristic management approaches aren’t always sufficient when approaching change that scales exponentially and non-linearly.

And where does Hexagon fit into the big picture? Like many forward thinkers, we are looking closely at the early adopters of this technology and preparing ourselves for a society in which we will see more and more automation. We are becoming part of discussions taking place about technologies such as robotics and automation and how key industries are incorporating them into their operations.

Brazilian Shipyard Increases Productivity and Reduces Cost by Using Smart Modular Assembly

The southern region of Brazil is in the spotlight for the marine industry, as many key shipyard companies are located in the region including Estaleiros do Brasil Ltda. (EBR).

EBR is assisting energy giant Petrobras in the engineering, procurement and construction of the P-74 floating production storage and offload vessel (FPSO), which can  process 150,000 oil barrels per day and 7 million Nm³ of gas.

The P-74 FPSO adopts the modular construction model and EBR is responsible for the construction of the topside modules and integration to the hull.

EBR selected ST Topografia, a Brazil-based customer of Leica Geosystems with expertise in infrastructure projects, to manage its assembly process and in doing so, sought a reliable solution to improve and control the quality of the modular dimensions.

ST Topografia chose Hexagon SolutionsSmart Modular Assembly, a unique solution with the capability of consolidating design, metrology, dimensional analysis and virtual assembly, providing quality information to construction projects quickly and accurately.

The Leica Nova MultiStation MS50 offered reliable and accurate measurements with prism, non-prism and scanning methods, coupled with the high performance of data analysis in Hexagon Metrology’s Spatial Analyzer (SA) software, which allows users to detect minor variations and report it in different ways such as graphical and numerical proposals.

Real-Time Monitoring and Visualisation of Water Infrastructure Using Hexagon Technologies

As with any infrastructure, water systems present huge risks. The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) is a non-governmental international organisation that  provides a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience in dam engineering to help discover better ways to control and secure our water resources. ICOLD will hold its annual meeting 1-6 June in Bali, Indonesia, where Hexagon Solutions will demonstrate how we bring together various technologies in standard operating environments, allowing engineers and managers to monitor and assess dam infrastructure in near real time using 3D models, GIS models and statistical charting all from within the Smart H2O solution.

Guaíra Sugar Mill Sees Increased Productivity with Smart Agriculture Solution

Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer in the world, and most of its farms are located in the state of São Paulo, where processing plants are producing sugar and ethanol.

Hexagon’s Smart Agriculture solution is helping ethanol and sugar producers, like Guaíra Sugar Mill, increase crop yield and optimize the performance of workers and machines through improved production and plantation designs based on available land, topography and ideal planting time.

Guaíra Sugar Mill is an award winning mill and electric energy producer. Founded in 1981, Guaíra distillers started out producing 120 000 liters of ethanol a day. Today, 2 700 workers produce 480 000 liters and 1 000 tons of sugar per day to supply the Brazilian, European, African, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Russian markets.

Sugarcane is a perennial crop, whose mature multiple stems can be harvested for five to six years with good productivity if managed correctly. Without proper irrigation or precision agriculture, harvest productivity can be quite a challenge. Maximizing harvest potential also requires keeping harvesting machines from running over the plant lines and killing the cane stems. The use of an autopilot in the machines can reduce this loss, but without proper interpretation and handling of the line information, this benefit is limited.

The growing demand for ethanol in a highly competitive market has created a perfect opportunity for the early adoption of precision agriculture. Our Smart Agriculture solution not only optimizes the utilization of land and water, but fertilizers, pesticides, seeds and other farming resources.

Utilizing geo-processing software from Intergraph® and steering solutions from Leica Geosystems, Smart Agriculture keeps farmers abreast of crop management and production through digital workflows created from geo-enabled data.

Using Intergraph GeoMedia® software, Smart Agriculture helped Guaíra Sugar Mill map land in a geo-referenced database with precise representation of field limits, water resources, roads and infrastructure for electricity and waste management. The topography of the land was optimized to create manageable farming areas.

Initially, planting lines should follow the topography of the terrain to guarantee a proper water supply for the sugarcane. Smart Agriculture helped the mill’s designer create multiple line alternatives and select the best set of lines to be sent to the autopilots. As the designed lines became an important asset of the farm, the solution allows users to store the planted lines in a database for future use in harvesting.

Smart Agriculture can estimate the time and fuel needed for each field operation. It provides better precision and reliability for planting, harvesting and pulverization. By integrating with the automatic pilot, Guaíra Sugar Mill was able to increase the number of lines for crop rows, increasing the amount of sugarcane produced.

According to Alfredo Barbosa Neto, coordinator of geo-technology at Rosário Farm, a branch of Guaíra Sugar Mill, their process for automatically generating crop row lines has improved dramatically. Neto says what used to take a lot of time on each project now only takes only a few minutes, so the planting team has more time to analyze all projects and check for accuracy.

During the 2011/2012 harvest, Guaíra Sugar Mill achieved an average productivity of 82.4 tons/ha on a four-year-old plantation. This is 23 per cent higher than 68.29 tons/ha, the average Brazilian productivity in sugarcane for the same period.* Much of this success was due to the pioneering use of precision agriculture with the Smart Agriculture solution.

Hexagon’s Smart H2O Solution: Solving Potential Problems Before They Happen

The Hexagon Smart H2O Solution made its first debut at two leading dam safety conferences. The solution was demonstrated at the 81st Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) Dam Safety Conference, giving attendees a tangible and comprehensive view of the solution in a dynamic and powerful way.

At ICOLD, the Smart H2O Solution was on display in The Exhibition, allowing U.S. and international organisations to view the solution’s offerings for the design, construction, operation and maintenance and safety of dams. Hexagon brands IMoSS and Intergraph®, were there as event sponsors, giving Hexagon and the Smart H2O Solution great exposure as hundreds of ICOLD attendees stopped by to talk to solution experts and left with a sense of excitement that – finally – a comprehensive, integrated and real-time solution is now available to address their key challenges.

The sustainable development of renewable resources with environmental stewardship is of great importance as developed and developing countries seek to strengthen and maintain critical infrastructure. The United States alone has almost 85 000 dams that deliver a wide range of benefits including water and power supply, flood risk management, water quality, recreation, sedimentation control and more. As a whole, there are hundreds of thousands of dams around the world providing the same utilities and benefits. However, as with any infrastructure, dams present huge risks. Regardless of cause – natural or man-made – a single threat can result in significant destruction. When a dam crumbles, a reservoir floods or a levee is breached, the results can be devastating, including loss of life, massive property damage or long-term environmental consequences. It is imperative we discover better ways to control and secure our water resources.

The Smart H2O Solution is a comprehensive, integrated water infrastructure management system that helps solve a potential deadly problem before it actually becomes one. The Smart H2O Solution combines Leica Geosystems’ total station and sensors, Intergraph’s monitoring and dispatch solutions and Z/I Imaging’s geospatial tools to provide a complete picture of critical water infrastructure. Together, they work to reduce the risk of infrastructure failure by keeping it protected and healthy, as well as safeguard it against disaster through the use of real-time monitoring, early warning systems and emergency operations plans.

Hexagon is getting involved and taking action.
