Brazilian Shipyard Increases Productivity and Reduces Cost by Using Smart Modular Assembly

The southern region of Brazil is in the spotlight for the marine industry, as many key shipyard companies are located in the region including Estaleiros do Brasil Ltda. (EBR).

EBR is assisting energy giant Petrobras in the engineering, procurement and construction of the P-74 floating production storage and offload vessel (FPSO), which can  process 150,000 oil barrels per day and 7 million Nm³ of gas.

The P-74 FPSO adopts the modular construction model and EBR is responsible for the construction of the topside modules and integration to the hull.

EBR selected ST Topografia, a Brazil-based customer of Leica Geosystems with expertise in infrastructure projects, to manage its assembly process and in doing so, sought a reliable solution to improve and control the quality of the modular dimensions.

ST Topografia chose Hexagon SolutionsSmart Modular Assembly, a unique solution with the capability of consolidating design, metrology, dimensional analysis and virtual assembly, providing quality information to construction projects quickly and accurately.

For ST Topografia, the Inspection Module of Smart Modular Assembly provided the integration of Leica Geosystems and Hexagon Metrology technologies in an industrial survey concept.

The Leica Nova MultiStation MS50 offered reliable and accurate measurements with prism, non-prism and scanning methods, coupled with the high performance of data analysis in Hexagon Metrology’s Spatial Analyzer (SA) software, which allows users to detect minor variations and report it in different ways such as graphical and numerical proposals.

Smart Modular Assembly is built on the strength of the Hexagon global family of brands. A collaborative solution from Hexagon Solutions using standard Intergraph, Hexagon Metrology and Leica Geosystems products and Sisgraph software development.

Smart Modular Assembly is an innovative way to link design information to the build workflow for large-scale construction projects. ST Topografia reports that using Smart Modular Assembly has produced amazing results.

“The Smart Modular Assembly solution brought a reliable and fast operation that we needed,” said Marcos Strelow, ST Topografia technical manager. “Now, there’s an automated method to guarantee the best solution in dimensional inspection and assembly process to my customer. The accurate data from the MS50 and SA software enables us run multiples simulations to the assembly process and validate the dimension of the marine modules.

“Finally, we can offer precise information for decision making before the problems occur, reducing costs of rework and avoiding future misalignments during integration of structures.”

Reliability that improves process and presents accuracy—that’s shaping smart change.
